Procedure Information
This scan is to identify the first lymph node (sentinel node) to which the cancer is likely to spread. A lymph node is part of the body’s lymphatic system, which carries fluid called lymph. Groups of lymph nodes are found in the neck, underarms, chest, abdomen, and groin.
The procedure involves an injection of a radioactive tracer near the site of your tumour. In theatre, your Surgeon will be able to identify the sentinel lymph node using a gamma probe which detects radioactivity. The risks are very low and the benefits of having the results from the procedure greatly outweigh the risk.
